Precast concrete products that are used for buried drainage systems are resilient and meet the requirements of sustainable development. In every region across the USA, engineers, transportation officials, and contractors know they can trust precast concrete products to arrive on site with a long service life. Reinforced concrete pipe has a proven service life of well over 100 years and will perform as designed on drainage pipelines with a design life of 100 years.

Precast concrete products exist for a long time without significant deterioration. With concrete pipe, durability deals with the life expectancy and enduring characteristics of its materials. RCP is a fire-resistant product that is resilient to natural and man-made forces. If surface features over a concrete pipeline are destroyed by fire, wind or rain, the pipeline will continue to function while the surface infrastructure is restored. If hurricane-force winds and flooding wash out a road over a concrete pipe culvert, the structure is likely to remain in place making it easier and faster to restore the crossing. Alternate pipeline and culvert materials tend to float downstream or become damaged beyond repair due to extreme heat and fire. There is no question that concrete pipe performs for 100 years and more, as a resilient engineered product.
Concrete is produced from local sand, aggregates, and water. Cement powder and waste by-products such as fly ash, slag cement, and silica fume may also be available locally. Significant environmental impact improvements are commonplace in cement production and the use of recycled cementitious materials diverted from the waste stream. Many precast concrete products can be reused or recycled at end of service life. The National Precast Concrete Association helped author the Environmental Product Declaration for underground precast concrete – industry wide. The “nutrition label” for precast concrete is archived at precast.org
Employees

Fast-growing urban areas like the Texas Triangle have local precast concrete facilities as part of their economy. Nearby production plants allow shorter delivery time and greater availability of products. In addition, local products are produced according to national standards and local specifications in environmentally controlled facilities. Engineers and support personnel assist clients with ensuring that standards are met and that special designs are available. The Turner Company employs over 200 people in two facilities who contribute to the tax base and support local businesses.
